New electronic initiative in the field of nutrition

Can help save the lives of millions of children and protect their health


The library is the new electronic Elena important element of the effort of WHO at the global level to help countries prevent and combat malnutrition




In an attempt to avoid the death and suffering of millions of people every year from malnutrition, WHO is launching today a new initiative on the Internet describes guidance on interventions food-saving lives and helping governments and health care providers to improve the methods used in the promotion of measures to combat all forms of malnutrition .


The purpose of the WHO Library's electronic evidence for actions in the field of nutrition (Elena), which was launched today in conjunction with the opening of a regional meeting in Sri Lanka last three days, and address the issue of nutrition, is to help governments to overcome one of the main problems raised in the fight against malnutrition namely the group of large, often conflicting, evidence and advice on existing preventive and therapeutic interventions effective in the field of nutrition.

The virtual library project Elena so through the selection and display the latest tips for addressing forms of malnutrition, the three major, a lack of nutrition, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, overweight and obesity.

Weight loss:

Is the main risk factor associated with many diseases in low-income countries, representing approximately 6% of global disease burden.

Iodine deficiency:

Which is the most prevalent forms of destitution in the world, although the possibility of an easily preventable, cause damage in the brain.

Anemia:

Which affects 1.6 billion people, as a result of iron deficiency often increases the risk of having underweight children and the incidence of anemia during pregnancy, standing behind a 18% of maternal deaths.


Deficiency of vitamin A:

Which affects 190 million children under the age of the study.

Zinc deficiency:

Which can affect the immune system and kills 430,000 children each year;

Overweight and obesity:

An estimated 1.5 billion adults over the age of 20 years are overweight or obese. Global estimates indicate that more than 40 million children under the age of five are already overweight or obese.


E-library and explains Elena effective health interventions to be taken to address malnutrition. One of these interventions to provide appropriate treatment for people with severe acute malnutrition; and the promotion of breastfeeding; and fortification of staple foods with vitamins and minerals such as iron and folic acid to wheat flour and corn.

It also recommends the use of powders of multiple micronutrient powders for the fortification of food given to children aged between six months and 23 months.

It also recommends giving pregnant women supplements of iron and folic acid daily to prevent anemia, and giving it on and off for Haúdhat and children under school age and school children.

And shall support the new electronic library Elena each from the Bill and Melinda Gates, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Micronutrient Initiative, located in Canada, and the Government of Ksemberg.
